What the Heck is a Squeeze Page?
Building an email list is essential for internet marketing success. Much like a direct mail list in the “real world”, your list will consist of qualified, targeted subscribers that you can promote your products and services to. A squeeze page is an essential tool to facilitate the building of that list.
A squeeze page, or “opt-in” is a single-page website which is designed for the sole purpose of collecting information from the prospective subscriber. It usually contains a brief description of what the visitor will receive after they enter their name and email address. This can be as brief as a couple of sentences, or it could resemble a mini-sales page with a couple of paragraphs, and bulleted text. Lately, many internet marketers use video and audio on their squeeze pages to get subscribers’ attention.
The most effective way to entice people to “opt-in” and enter their email address into the web form on your squeeze page is to offer them a free product or item of value. Such as an e-book, or report, application software, training materials, or other information that the subscriber would find valuable. This is known as an “ethical bribe”.
It is important to design your squeeze page in such a way that the visitor has only two options. Either enter their email address and receive the product, or navigate away from the page empty-handed. Do not offer any other distractions such as links to other external websites. This is not the time to promote your blog, or offer other products. You’ll have plenty of time for that after they join your list. If you give them a reason to leave your opt-in, you may never get their email address.
You should also make sure that your squeeze page doesn’t have any “leaks”. Meaning that there’s no way for the visitor to by-pass entering their information to get to your free product. If you put a direct link to the download page on your opt-in, then anyone could view the source code to get the URL. Instead, send them the link to the download in their first email. Either that, or set up a re-direct with your auto-responder when they confirm their email subscription. Either of those two options will ensure that they have to give up their email address in order to get your free offer.
Now that you know what a squeeze page is, the next question should be; where, or how do you get one? Your first option is to design one yourself. If you have some familiarity with HTML editors, this could be a viable option. However, this can be time consuming (time that could be spent promoting your money making products), and depending on your skill level, it may not end up looking very professional, or appealing.
You could pay a web designer to make your squeeze pages for you, but unless you know the designer personally, you never know what you’re going to get. And you could end up waiting a long time to get the finished product, (if you get it all… But that’s a topic for another article!) Not to mention that you could end up spending a small fortune, as you’re definitely going to need a variety of squeeze pages for different applications and markets.
